How To Use The Canon PhotoStitch Software

If you have pictures of a large subject, or if you have different pictures of the same subject and they only have slight differences, you can use Canon’s PhotoStitch software do merge the photos and turn them into one great composition.

The good thing about using the software is that it is very easy to use. It all starts with you opening the software. Check the menu for the Edit button and click on the Stitch Photos button. When you click on this button, you will see a browser area that will allow you to choose photos. Select the pictures you want to merge. Click on Open PhotoStitch.

The PhotoStitch window will open with your pictures in it. You can see click on the Merge tab if you are satisfied with the pictures. But if you need to edit, rotate or do something else with any or all of the pictures, there is a separate tutorial for them. But if the pictures are fine, click on Merge. You can actually adjust the settings if you feel that it can make the stitched photo look better.

Once the software is done merging the pics, it will show the finished product. You can then proceed to save it as is or save it with another file name by clicking on the Save As button.

If you think the PhotoStich software is easy to use, it is. What isn’t so easy though is taking different pictures in such a way that they don’t look like an obvious mashup when you run them through the software. Experienced photographers would know how to do this. For amateurs, Canon cameras are built in with a PhotoStitch assist feature.

The PhotoStitch software is free to download but based on our research, it is not the easiest software to use, and we have seen users give it an average star rating of just 2.1 on Cnet.com. Of course, this doesn’t mean it can’t be a good software to use. Just like photo editing software, it takes practice and more practice to create wonderful compositions. And by practice, we mean practicing taking pictures specifically for PhotoStitch.

Remember that the software is just that: a software. And it merges pictures using a set of parameters and a certain algorithm. You have to be the one to adjust so that the technology works in your favor.

Just to repeat, if you have a Canon camera, turn on the PhotoStitch assist feature to take photos that would be beautiful to merge later on. What if you don’t have a Canon camera? Then you would need to practice taking pictures a certain way and work with the merging software until you get it right. If you want, you could also ask experienced photographers to teach you if they have been using PhotoStitch.

For more information on how to use PhotoStitch, there are many YouTube videos out there that you can view and copy. And there many websites out there that offer free tutorials.

Probably the only disadvantage to using PhotoStitch is that it can only work on pictures in JPG format. You would have to change the file format if the pictures are not JPG. But you don’t need to worry because this can be as easy as clicking on the Save As button using a photo editing software.

PhotoStitch is probably the only photo-merging software out there, or at least it’s the only one that is easy to use and delivers great results in general. If you consistently get bad results, perhaps it’s time to get a Canon camera or change the way you take pictures. Or both.
